Voices from the Coalface: Practitioner Perspectives on the Challenges of Community-Based Work
(Edited by John R. Owen and Freidoon Khavarpour)
The contributors to this volume present a unique series of insights into the lives and challenges of
practitioners engaged in community based work. Addressed with the measure of good scholarship, the
subject under question is examined close up and with an eye to engaging the field with as little distance
as is practically possible.

------------------Greetings!
Please feel free to e-mail me any events or other information that you would like to share with the Social Sciences Community through this newsletter. Members of the Social Science Community are invited to submit reviews and feedback on papers that have been published. Please see the Social Sciences Journal News section of this newsletter to find out more about this. Contributing Editors Needed
The Social Sciences Community Newsletter is intended to serve as a forum through which its recipients can communicate items of relevance to their colleagues and, in doing so, assist in the building of community around a shared interest in interdisciplinary social sciences. Contributing Editors play a key role in the Newsletter by providing essential content, including information on conferences and symposia, fellowships, books by Social Sciences Community members, opportunities to publish, and additional items of interest. The Contributing Editors are particularly well suited to this role because their disciplinary affiliation, professional networks and geographical location, among other things, often provide them with access to information that might be otherwise overlooked or inaccessible.
We are currently looking for additional Contributing Editors for the Social Sciences Community Newsletter. We greatly appreciate the continued participation of Contributing Editor, Norma Burgess of Syracuse University, New York. However we recognize that, given the size of the task, additional Editors are needed to significantly increase Newsletter content. We are looking for people who are professionally engaged and interested in the mission of the Newsletter, as well as able to commit to submitting at least one contribution per month.
In addition to assisting with the Newsletter, Contributing Editors serve on the International Advisory Board of the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (www.SocialSciencesConference.com) and its corresponding Journal (www.SocialSciences-Journal.com). Advisory Board members provide suggestions on the themes of each year's Conference and Journal, as well as the overall intellectual direction. In return, Contributing Editors receive a complimentary registration to the Conference and subscription to the Journal.

This villa that will host the dinner was named "La Ferdinanda" after Ferdinando I, who commissioned the work carried out by Bernardo Buontalenti between 1594-98. It was used by the Medici Grand Dukes primarily for hunts that were organised on the extensive neighbouring Mount Albano reserve, which was first acquired by Cosimo. Noteworthy are the characteristic chimneys that line the roof of this villa (also nicknamed "the villa of a hundred chimneys"). The villa also originally housed many treasures, including tapestries designed by Stradanodell'Allori which have now been moved, and the famous views of the Medici villas, painted in lunette by Giust Utens in 1599 and now in Florence's Com'era museum. Today, the villa is privately owned and is often used for banquets, receptions and conferences. Out of season the local archeological museum is housed here, with many Etruscan and medieval artefacts on display. If you intend to follow hot on the trail of the Etruscans, the ancient Etruscan settlement of Artimino is well worth a visit. If you then head for Poggio a Caiano, you can pay a visit to the tomb of Montefortini where you can visit one of the two Etruscan tombs that have been unearthed.

A Short History of Prato
Within travelling distance of Rome, Florence, Pisa and Bologna, Prato is a small but thriving Tuscan city, with a beautiful historic centre and a vibrant cultural and economic life. Famous since the renaissance for its textile industry and still renowned for its manufacture of fine Italian fabrics. The city has a population of some 180,000 inhabitants. A growing percentage of these are immigrants from mainland China, the Indian sub-continent, north and west Africa and elsewhere. The story of textiles in Prato is told in its textile museum. The communal, provincial and regional governments, are progressive in outlook and active in European community affairs. They have welcomed the presence of an Australian academic institution, Monash University, in the heart of their city. -------------------------------------------------------------------* Second International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
Venue: University of Granada, Granada, Spain

The International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences will address interdisciplinary practices across the social sciences, and between the social sciences and the natural sciences, applied sciences and the professions. A Short History about the Venue
Palacio de los Córdova was built in Placeta de las Descalzas about 1530 and completed in 1592. Its owner was Luis Fernández de Córdova, First Lieutenant of Granada and Knight Commander of Villanueva de la Fuente. It is unknown when the family sold the edifice – Francisco de Paula Valladar claims, in 1911 – that “after having been used as a factory, wood warehouse, etc., it is the property today of a Society or Community which has it rented as municipal warehouses...” In 1919, after passing into the hands of Ricardo Martín Flores, is demolished to construct the Teatro Gran Capitán on the site, conserving its historical-artistic value in the property "Villa María", in the Camino de Pulianas.
In the 60's, and with the possibility that the remains could be taken to Córdoba, the Mayor, Manuel Sola, convinced the Duke of Montellano, who was married to Hilda Fernández de Córdova, to reconstruct the palace, advancing 100.000 pesetas towards the project. Based on the designs of Manuel Gómez Moreno, the architect Álvarez de Toledo, from Málaga, planned the reconstruction of the Palacio on a property situated on the slopes of the Cuesta del Chapiz. The first stone was laid in 1965, and in 1983 the City Hall of Granada acquires the Palacio de los Córdova to install the Municipal Archive, which opened its doors to the public for the first time in August, 1984.
Main speakers include:

-------------- ------------------[1] Welcome
------------------Greetings!
Interdisciplinary research and exploration charges traditional disciplines to re-think a very broad world view. Once thought to be easily identifiable and ordered, social science researchers quickly identified themselves by the size of the groups they studies, individuals, communities or societies. Many arguments waxed over the relevancy of primary versus secondary data analysis and the longstanding debate about the quality of quantitative research and the “richness” of qualitative research. It is a different era today and many have found great explanatory value in combining resources and basic tenets of multiple disciplines to find the answers to many questions that impact the scholarly fields as well as measurable impact on society as well. This year’s conference will further examine this growing and stimulating phenomenon—join us in the discussions in Granada!

-------------------------------HOSTING THE SOCIAL SCIENCES CONFERENCE
Would your institution, or an institution with which you are affiliated, be interested in hosting the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences? Hosting the conference attracts considerable international attention for the host institution, and the opportunity to connect local concerns and expertise into a wider intellectual community.
Possibilities include hosting the full, annual conference, or hosting a shorter, more narrowly themed (two or three day) symposium midway between the annual conferences. Content from the conference and symposia are published into the International Journal of Social Sciences.
If you are interested in exploring these possibilities, please email Helen Agans in our office at the University of Illinois helen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com

Britain, second only to the United States in the number of international student it attracts, is making provisions to allow international students to stay one year after their studies are completed. An exciting opportunity to learn more about the global culture—see www.Chronicle.com on the news blog.
Question for consideration:
1. How have global political changes impacted scholarly exchanges? What other options can you suggest to enrich academia (faculty and student development)?

-------------------------------The second annual Social Sciences Conference planning is well underway and we are counting on your presence—virtual or physical. Great ideas and research projects often begin with discussions from sessions, papers, or plenaries. Begin to broaden your horizons to see how your current research might fit “outside of your disciplinary box” to enhance explanations that you might have already begun. Generally, there are others who are thinking similarly. Collaborations help to fuel excitement and excellence—come and share your ideas with us in Granada. If you are aware of other opportunities, please send them along so that we can include them in next month’s issue!

-------------- -----------------[1] Welcome
-----------------Greetings!
Academic sustainability and accountability appears to be an ongoing discussion in many venues. Funding sources and support are often impacted by public perceptions of higher education and the actual services that it provides to the citizenry. The industry continues to take on multiple meanings for many. What is clear is that the interdisciplinary nature of what is taught and what is expected continues to take on significance. Recently, Harvard began examining and possibly adopting new interdisciplinary strategies in science and math. As innovation reaches one of the world’s most respected institutions, the pace is being set and redefined to address the acquisition of greater depth in student knowledge and collaborations in fields not generally known to blur lines of distinction. Though social scientists have long debated this value, it is becoming clearer that a broader approach is the one on which the social sciences have taken the lead. We do not develop additional insights in isolation; approaches are further strengthened by a supporting cast of disciplines and are held together by the strengths of each. Comments? —join the new Social Sciences Blog and broaden your horizons!!!
The Social Sciences Community Newsletter is designed to update you on evolving discussions, debates and pertinent information locally and globally. Your contributions are important and welcomed. Current debates are centering on interdisciplinary approaches for students, the importance of knowledge breadth and depth as they continue to prepare to live, learn and work in a global community.

-------------- -----------------1. WELCOME
-----------------Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Social Science Community Newsletter. I am both pleased and excited to share the news with you from the first conference held this past summer in Rhodes, Greece. The conversations were lively, the intellectual conversation was as warm as the beautiful, summer sun and the interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences was at its best. Many of us have discussed the richness that evolves in discussion combining and intertwining multiple disciplines in ways that seem appropriate, to garner explanations of social phenomena with a broader view. The newsletter is designed to keep you up to date with the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences and the International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. Plan now to join us!
If you find this newsletter useful, please forward it to your colleagues.
-------------------------2. COMMUNITY NEWS
-------------------------To get the discussion started, we’ve posed questions below to consider. As you read through, what is most salient for you? Feel free to join in the discussion. The discussions will grow with your support.
Whose responsibility and privilege is it to decide what counts as pure science? Who makes the decision? How long ago was it made? Who aspired to it? Who created it, manufactured it, distributed it, and made certain that its position was maintained? What distinguishes a pure discipline from its counterpart, the impure discipline or the contents of interdisciplinary dialogue? What role did, does, will gender play? What were the consequences for the disciplines and for others who were excluded? Further, is there such a thing as a "pure" science that can be so narrowly defined that it was not somehow impacted by or combined with any other matter possible? Even more significant is who determines what constitutes a "social science". Can it be that persons from the same disciplinary classification and category could make a different determination depending upon the amount of disengagement the discipline is likely to receive from its major components/scholars in the field?
Acknowledgement must be given to the scientific method or the way in which inquiry into social phenomenon is conducted so that the repeatability factor continues if one claims research expertise in this area. It is highly unlikely, however, that even in the beginning that there was just one pure science. Early scholars aptly defined the "queen" of the social sciences as the one most resembling the physical sciences.

--------------------------------------------------------------------* THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTERDISCIPLINARY SOCIAL SCIENCES
The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences aims to examine the nature of disciplinary practices, and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of ‘real world’ applications. It also interrogates what constitutes ‘science’ in a social context, and the connections between the social and other sciences.
The journal discusses the distinctive disciplinary practices within the sciences of the social, and examines examples of these practices. In order to define and exemplify disciplinarity, the journal fosters dialogue ranging from the broad and speculative to the microcosmic and empirical. In considering the varied interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary or multidisciplinary work across and between the social, natural and applied sciences, the journal showcases interdisciplinary practices in action.
The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical, to wide-ranging multi-disciplinary and transdisciplinary practices, to perspectives on knowledge and method.
The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences is fully peer-reviewed with a rigorous refereeing process to ensure a high standard of quality. The editors and advisory board comprise leading scholars in the education field.
