[2] Journal News - http://www.Technology-Journal.com/
-----------------------------------------------------------------** Award Winner Announcement **
Congratulations to Dr Yasmin Ibrahim, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the area of Technology,
Knowledge and Society.
Paper abstract: Mobility and the convergence of technologies have enabled the wired body to be celebrated as a site for private consumption of music, media and simulated realities. The trends towards personalisation of mobile technologies is implicating the individual body as a collaborator in the creation of media events where the personal gaze of the consumer is contributing to the visual narratives of global and local events. This co-optation of the mediated mobile body as part of the media gaze has initiated new media rituals in constructing event-driven news. This paper examines the personal gaze in the political economy of events construction and the notion of post-surveillance society where mobile bodies become new sites for personal and collective technological gaze into society on an everyday basis.
Dr Ibrahim's paper, The Wired Body and Event Construction: Mobile Technologies and the Technological Gaze, may be accessed in the online bookstore: http://ijt.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.42/prod.457.

'On Technology', the newsletter of the International Conference and Journal on Technology, Knowledge and Society, is intended to serve as a means through which its recipients can communicate items of relevance to their colleagues and, in so doing, assist in the building of a community around the past, current and future role of Technology. Contributing Editors play a key role in the newsletter by providing essential content, including information on conferences and symposia, fellowships, books by the International Conference community members, opportunities to publish, and additional items of interest. The Contributing Editors are particularly well suited to this role because their disciplinary affiliation, professional networks and geographical location, among other things, often provide them with access to information that might be otherwise overlooked or inaccessible.
We are currently looking for Contributing Editors for 'On Technology' who are professionally engaged and interested in the mission of the newsletter, as well as able to commit to submitting at least one contribution per month.
In addition to assisting with the newsletter, Contributing Editors serve on the International Advisory Board of the International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society (http://www.Technology-Conference.com) and its corresponding Journal (http://www.Technology-Journal.com). Advisory Board members provide suggestions on the themes of each year's conference and Journal, as well as the overall intellectual direction. In return, Contributing Editors receive a complimentary registration to the conference and subscription to the Journal.
Applicants should send a letter of interest and CV to Helen Agans at helen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com. Please note that because we are interested in serving the diverse, and truly international, interests of the International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society community, we hope to have a correspondingly diverse applicant pool. Once we have received and reviewed all applications, e-mail notifications will be sent to all applicants notifying them of the final decision.

----------------------------------The 2008 IAP2 international conference: 'Public Participation and Corporate Social Responsibility: From Why to How'
Running from August 27 - 29, the 2008 IAP2 international conference is based in Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde. It will be attractive to those in business, local authorities, the professions and third sectors, government, the armed forces, health and community sectors - in fact all those areas that would wish to perform public participation well, or perhaps better, than is happening at the moment. We are expecting first rate international speakers and rigorous debate. There will be a research strand running through the three days and a chance to hear what others have done and for you to experience immersion case studies where an effective partnership between public and business (however defined) has been established - to the benefit of all.
This will be a conference that is highly interactive: it will be both intellectually demanding and demonstrate good engagement processes. So, come and take part; come and present (should you wish) but most importantly, just come!
Please contact Diane Coyle on diane.coyle@strath.ac.uk for more information and a conference pack.

The International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society at Northeastern University was a terrific success and we want to thank all the participants for making it a frank and thoughtful discussion. The conference addressed a range of important themes and we're especially thankful to the main speakers who each contributed something unique: Jody Berland, of York University, David Matheson of Carleton University, Karim Gherab Martin, visiting research scholar at Harvard University, James Paul Gee of Arizona State University, the host institution's Ronald Sandler, and McKenzie Wark of the New School for Liberal Arts and the New School for Social Research.

--------------------------------------------------------------Boston Technology Conference (Tony Stavely, Common Ground Publishing)
Northeastern University in Boston, USA, played host to the Fourth International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society, 18-20 January, 2008. Though the weather was downright cold, the delegates kept warm discussing their work with each other in sessions, at morning and afternoon tea and over lunch, and in the talking circles and closing session. The conference featured plenary talks by Jody Berland, of York University, David Matheson of Carleton University, Karim Gherab Martín, visiting research scholar at Harvard University, James Paul Gee of Arizona State University, the host institution's Ronald Sandler, and McKenzie Wark of the New School for Liberal Arts and the New School for Social Research. Besides the main speakers there were 178 presentations in parallel sessions and 87 virtual presentations on the World Wide Web.
Plenary speakers cited trends in our digitally networked world such as the increasing use of clearly not-real animals in advertising and the decreasing number of close friendships among real people today. They suggested shifts in the way science is done and the way video games point to new ways of learning, they showed how the protocols governing the production of foundational cultural documents have shifted from the King James Bible to the Wikipedia and its emerging successors, and they pointed a tangled skein of social, technical, and ethical issues thrust into the foreground by developments in nanotechnology. Other conference presentations covered an amazing array of topics from technological support for the development of personal relationships in the classroom to the way that knowledge management systems could support the devolution of power to local regions in developing countries. As various as their topics, the delegates came from many nations and most of the world's continents to share their ideas and enthusiasm.
Special thanks are due to Professor Marcus Breen of the Technology, Knowledge and Society Advisory Board and Northeastern University's Department of Communication Studies, and Kathleen Newberry, Director of Conference and Event Planning for Northeastern University.

AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT
Congratulations to Dr David Matheson, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the area of technology, knowledge and society.
Paper abstract: This paper argues that the surveillance society risks undermining the ability of its citizens to develop virtue for the same sorts of reasons that overprotective parenting can impair the character development of children. Accordingly, to the extent that we think virtue development among citizens is important, we have reason to resist the transformation of the networked society into the surveillance society. I begin with a review of the psychological evidence linking overprotective parenting of a certain sort to impaired character development in children, before offering an explanation of this link: the overprotection carries with it an overt, disaffective excess of surveillance that tends to vitiate a plausible condition on the development of character virtue derived from Aristotle. I then point out that since the networked monitoring systems that pervade the surveillance society carry with them a similar kind of surveillance, we have reason to believe that citizens of the surveillance society will like the overprotected children – face heightened difficulties in satisfying that condition.
Dr Matheson's paper, Virtue and the Surveillance Society, can be accessed in the online bookstore: http://ijt.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.42/prod.383
If you have purchased or read this paper, please add a review at http://ijt.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.42/prod.383/addReview

MAPPING MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION RESEARCH
The Communication Research Centre (CRC) of the University of Helsinki has completed the project "Mapping Media and Communication Research" in Finland, Estonia, Germany, France, the United States and Japan.
The focus of the project is on mass communication research, but it also takes into account studies on linguistics, organizational communication, public relations, research on communication technology as well as economy of communication when they are related to media and communication research. It not only maps academic communication and media research but also research made by governmental institutions and private research agencies as well as – so far as it is possible – private media companies’ own research activities.
The reports can be found here:

THE BLOGGING REVOLUTION: GOVERNMENT IN THE AGE OF WEB 2.0
A report from David C. Wyld examines the phenomenon of blogging in the context of the larger revolutionary forces at play in the development of the second-generation Internet, where interactivity among users is key. This is also referred to as "Web 2.0." Wyld observes that blogging is growing as a tool for promoting not only online engagement of citizens and public servants, but also offline engagement. He describes blogging activities by members of Congress, governors, city mayors, and police and fire departments in which they engage directly with the public. He also describes how blogging is used within agencies to improve internal communications and speed the flow of information.

THE GENI PROJECT
The National Science Foundation developed an experimental facility called the Global Environment for Network Innovation, GENI. It's goal is to enable the research community to invent and demonstrate a global communications network and related services that will be qualitatively better than today's Internet.
GENI is designed to allow as a experiments on a wide variety of problems in communications, networking, distributed systems, cyber-security, and networked services and applications. The emphasis is on enabling researchers to experiment with radical network designs in a way that is far more realistic than they can today. Researchers will be able to build their own new versions of the "net" or to study the "net" in ways that are not possible today. Compatibility, with the Internet is NOT required. The purpose of GENI is to give researchers the opportunity to experiment unfettered by assumptions or requirements and to support those experiments at a large scale with real user populations.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia invites paper submissions for a special issue on “Studying the Users of Digital Education Technologies: Theories, Methods, and Analytical Approaches”
This special issue addresses issues associated with the qualitative understanding of the use of digital educational technologies in real-life contexts (with a focus on digital libraries, broadly conceived), by emphasizing the importance of contextual sociotechnical studies of technology use and design. The issue will consider educational technologies as complex mixtures of people, practices and technologies, embedded in a range of institutional, technological and social contexts. The editor therefore invites contributions that address the qualitative and sociotechnical study of digital educational technologies and users “in the wild”.
Guest editor: Michael Khoo

NEW BOOK: DIGITAL STATE AT THE LEADING EDGE
http://www.digitalstate.ca/
Digital State at the Leading Edge is the first attempt to take a comprehensive view of the influence of IT on the whole of government, including areas such as political campaigning, public consultation, service delivery, knowledge management, and procurement.
The impact of information technology (IT) on government in the last five years has been profound. Using the governments of Canada and Ontario (both recognized as international leaders in the use of IT) as case studies, exploring the concepts of channel choice, procurement market analysis, organizational integration, and digital leadership, the authors seek to understand how IT is transforming government and what the nature of that transformation is. In the process, they offer an explanation of Canada's relative success, and conclude with practical advice to politicians and public servants about how to manage IT in government more effectively.
Based on original research undertaken over the last five years, the findings of this innovative study will be of particular interest to those studying or working in the fields of public administration, political science, and information technology.

- Technology Journal Vol 2 (2006 Technology Conference participants)
Paper submissions resulting from the recent Technology Symposium are now closed. Thank you to referees who have submitted their reports by the date requested. The referee process requires two reports per paper. When we have only received one report - this is not returned as the result of the single report can be misleading as to what the overall result will be. Therefore, we only return reports to authors if there are two reports received.
We did not receive a number of reports for submitted papers from assigned referees. New referees have now been assigned to complete the refereeing process for these papers. If you have been assigned to referee a paper, please complete and submit your report by the date requested to assist in finalising the refereeing for these paper submissions.
Typesetting will commence for final paper submissions. Authors will soon receive a typeset PDF proof of their final paper submission.
