Contributing Editors Needed

The Sustainability Community Newsletter is intended to serve as a forum through which its recipients can communicate items of relevance to their colleagues and, in doing so, assist in the building of community around a shared interest in issue of diversity, the role of sustainability. Contributing Editors play a key role in the Newsletter by providing essential content, including information on conferences and symposia, fellowships, books by Sustainability Community members, opportunities to publish, and additional items of interest. The Contributing Editors are particularly well suited to this role because their disciplinary affiliation, professional networks and geographical location, among other things, often provide them with access to information that might be otherwise overlooked or inaccessible.

We are currently looking for additional Contributing Editors for the Sustainability Community Newsletter. We greatly appreciate the continued participation of Contributing Editor Jim McAllister. However we recognize that, given the size of the task, additional Editors are needed to significantly increase Newsletter content. We are looking for people who are professionally engaged and interested in the mission of the Newsletter, as well as able to commit to submitting at least one contribution per month.

In addition to assisting with the Newsletter, Contributing Editors serve on the International Advisory Board of the International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability (www.Sustainability-Conference.com) and International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability (www.Sustainability-Journal.com). Advisory Board members provide suggestions on the themes of each year's Conference and Journal, as well as the overall intellectual direction. In return, Contributing Editors receive a complimentary registration to the Conference and subscription to the Journal.

Applicants should send a letter of interest and CV to Helen Agans at helen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com. Please note that because we are interested in the serving the diverse, and truly international, interests of the Sustainability Community, we hope to have a correspondingly diverse applicant pool. Once we have received and reviewed all applications, e-mail notifications will be sent to all applicants notifying them of the final decision.

Creator Sites

All officially registered Sustainability Conference participants can make their own Creator Website. The first step is visiting the CGPublisher Creator page (http://www.cgpublisher.com/ui/about/for_creators.html). When you've logged in, you can proceed to develop a website to serve as private storage and collaborative space, and publicly display publications, biographical and contact information, weblog entries, and external links.

Review of Articles

Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful. This is why Common Ground provides all readers with the opportunity to comment on any paper that they've read via the 'Write a Review' feature. All you need to do is to go to the page for that particular article, go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'Write a Review' link and let your voice be heard. Give your review a title, add your review content and click on the star rating. All reviews are moderated by Common Ground's publishing team (to prevent irrelevant or slanderous submissions). Please note that the 'Write a Review' feature is not the place to inform us of typos in the catalogue. If you notice such mistakes and would like to report them, please contact us at journals@commongroundpublishing.com noting the product link and the specific error.

HOSTING THE SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE

Would your institution, or an institution with which you are affiliated, be interested in hosting the International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability? Hosting the conference attracts considerable international attention for the host institution, and the opportunity to connect local concerns and expertise into a wider intellectual community.

Possibilities include hosting the full, annual conference, or hosting a shorter, more narrowly themed (two or three day) symposium midway between the annual conferences. Content from the conference and symposia are published into the International Journal on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability.

If you are interested in exploring these possibilities, please email Helen Agans in our office at the University of Illinoishelen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com.

*CONFERENCE NEWS – http://www.Sustainability-Conference.com*

* The Third International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability

Thank you to all who made the 2007 Sustainability Conference such a success. Bronwen Robson, on behalf of the Sustainability Committee has provided a Conference Evaluation Form to all participants (Email: support+S07@commonground.com.au). Participants have been remarkably unforthcoming about response to the meeting, but a few comments are quoted below:

“[The 2007 Sustainability Conference] expanded my understanding of sustainability, particularly the links to social and environmental justice. I met some interesting scholars. Worthwhile”.

“I was interested to see how the attention within sustainability seems to be shifting more and more towards issues of intra-generational equity (or as Julian Agyeman puts it ‘just sustainability’). I have always been interested in this area of sustainability, but the conference has planted the seeds of some research ideas into my head that I hope to share at the next conference!”

“In line with my research interest in regenerative design, or creating positive change rather than only limiting damage (the common perspective within sustainability), I believe that the Conferences present opportunities to engage in active, participative, and positive contributions to the local place in which the conference is situated (particularly given the even more substantial economic and environmental resources that are expended in moving people from all over the world to one location).”

- Valley of the Kings Site Management Masterplan

The Theban Mapping Project announces the publication of the Valley of the Kings Site Management Masterplan on the TMP’s website @ www.thebanmappingproject.com

The Valley of the Kings (Wadi Biban el Mouluk) on the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor, in the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a World Heritage site whose archaeological fame and economic importance as a tourist destination are internationally recognized.

The result of its popularity has been a massive increase in visitor numbers over the last decade, now often exceeding 7,000 visitors every day. This number is guaranteed to increase in future years. Without a carefully prepared site management plan, the very existence of this fragile resource could be seriously threatened.

In the spring of 2004, the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) commissioned the Theban Mapping Project to prepare a site management masterplan for the Valley. This project was generously supported by the World Monuments Fund (WMF), and the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), and several private donors.

This ‘final draft for public consultation’ is now available for you to download and we would very much like to have your feedback regarding our proposal for the future of this important site.

The savewater! awards® recognise outstanding achievements and innovation in water conservation by businesses, government, schools, local communities and individuals. The Awards have emerged as the leading water sustainability awards in Victoria, Australia. For the first time in 2006, the savewater! awards® are going national - with the 'Product Innovations' category open to entrants right across Australia.

Education Programs: For delivering outstanding water conservation programs within educational institutions. Education and communication programs in educational institutions play a vital role in achieving long-term attitudinal and behavioural change to water and the way we use it. This category is open to pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary education institutions and organisations.

As we face continued drought, how we use our water resources is a major challenge that affects all Australians – those who are developing educational programs to teach how to use it more sustainably are invited to share their knowledge and be rewarded and recognised.

Past winners in this category have included Ecolinc Science and Technology Innovations Centre in Bacchus Marsh and Syndal South Primary School in Mount Waverley (joint winners in 2005); Toyota (2003); and LaTrobe University (2002).

Entries close 18 October 2006, during National Water Week. Further information can be found at: http://www.savewater.com.au/?sectionid=211 or contact Paige-Elise Reade for further information, images etc

LEISA: Magazine on Low External Input & Sustainable Agriculture

Issue 22/4 December 2006: Making the most of ecological processes

Deadline for submission of articles: 1 September 2006

E-mail: ileia@ileia.nl

Trying to develop sustainable agriculture which builds on ecological processes is an ongoing challenge. Though some of the basic ecological principles are well known (for example, nutrient cycles or nitrogen fixation), we know very little about how these processes work in detail and about how the different ecological processes interact with each other. Most of the knowledge about ecological agriculture therefore builds on practical experiences and trial and error – or success.
