** The Fifteenth International Conference on Learning **
3-6 June 2008
Univesity of Illinois, Chicago, USA
We recently concluded the Fifteenth International Conference on Learning at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. The Conference attracted nearly 400 delegates from 30 different countries: Australia, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam. A breadth of professional perspectives characterized the conference delegation. Delegates included teachers, administrators, policy makers, and businesspeople, as well as scholars from education, area studies, communications, computer science, literature, the natural sciences, psychology, sociology and many other areas of study.

Each day featured plenary sessions, parallel sessions and less formal discussions. Diversity of nationality, and academic and professional specialization, among other factors, provided for multiple perspectives and dynamic conversations on learning in its many facets. At the end of the second day of the Conference, delegates met at The Parthenon in Chicago's Greektown for the Conference dinner. The Learning Conference concluded with a collective discussion of the most important issues raised through the course of the four days and with a consideration of how the dialogue that began at this Conference might be continued until next years' Conference.

Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback

Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful. This is why Common Ground provides all readers with the opportunity to comment on any paper that they've read via the 'Write a Review' feature. All you need to do is to go to the page for that particular article, go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'Write a Review' link and let your voice be heard. Give your review a title, add your review content and click on the star rating. All reviews are moderated by Common Ground's publishing team (to prevent irrelevant or slanderous submissions). Please note that the 'Write a Review' feature is not the place to inform us of typo's in the catalogue. If you note typo's that you'd like to let us know about please contact us at journals@commongroundpublishing.com noting the product link and the specific error.

Online Conversations

Please join us in the online conversations at: http://ijl.cgpublisher.com/diary. We encourage entries from a range of topics. Recent entries address a range of topics from educational leadership to ethics in research. Your comments are welcomed as well.

Much of his current work is focused on analyses of complex learning and instructional environments, including those incorporating powerful information technology tools, with the goal of better understanding the nature of student learning and the conditions that enhance deep understanding. Increasingly his research and writing has focused on the role of cognitive theory and technology in educational reform and translating research results into implications for practitioners and policy makers. Welcome to the October 2007 issue of the Learning Community Newsletter.

This will be the last month that I will be serving as your editor as the Common Ground conference newsletters continue to evolve. Hence, our readers will be receiving further notice of this change as a new procedure gets underway with the next newsletter in November. As of that date, I will be serving as a Contributing Editor rather than as a Publishing Editor while continuing to provide support to Common Ground as a member of the International Advisory Board. Information regarding pertinent conferences and journals may, henceforth, be sent to Allison Witt (allison.witt@commongroundpublishing.com) who will be working on the Learning Community Newsletter.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your newsletter editor since January 2006. We look forward to the positive changes in the Learning Community Newsletter which will continue to encourage your participation in the months ahead.

[1] Welcome

-----------------

Welcome to the September 2007 issue of the Learning Community Newsletter. We want to thank all of our readers for their understanding in not having produced an August 2007 issue of the newsletter. Having ended in June our biggest Learning Conference ever and having moved to a new location in advance of a new academic year, the Learning Community Newsletter required a little time off. Now, a month later, we’re ready for the remainder of 2007 and anticipate another full cycle of successful learning opportunities through our conference series, by contributions to The International Journal of Learning, this newsletter and by other means. With over 1000 people, for example, in attendance at the 14th International Conference on Learning held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa this past June, we can look forward to the possibility of surpassing that number as well as further enhancing both the variety and quality of learning opportunities in the 15th International Conference on Learning which is to be held at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA in June 2008.

We wish to thank all of you who contributed to the successes of the past and encourage increased participation by each and every one of our readers in one or more ways in the months ahead.

As always, we look forward to hearing from you regarding news-worthy items, how we might improve this newsletter and the like.

The 2007 Learning Conference organisers are offering five pre- and post-conference tours on Monday 25th and Saturday 30th of June, at times noted below.
Tour 1: Siyaya Soweto (9am to 1pm) $AU80
Tour 2: Apartheid Museum (2pm to 5pm) $AU60

Victory
Market Theatre - Laager Theatre
Tuesday, June 26th
$AU12.00
Celebrated South African writer Athol Fugard continues his love affair with the Karoo in his latest play, Victory, starting soon at the Market Theatre.
In Victory he examines the realities of a world robbed of hope, existing at the mercy of senseless violence and drug abuse. In this dark and insightful drama, three characters investigate the unfulfilled promises laid down by the wealthy and white, and the subsequent desperation and disappointment experienced by South Africa's youth.
The Baxter Theatre Centre's resident director, Lara Foot Newton, directs this evocative tale of profound honesty and realism with a cast of three led by veteran actor Cobus Rossouw, together with Ameera Patel and Wayne van Rooyen. Award-winners Jaco Bouwer is responsible for design and Mannie Manim for lighting.

Ghoema
Market Theatre - Main Theatre
Tuesday, June 26th
$AU15.00
GHOEMA, the multi-award winning musical revue that celebrates and explores our musical heritage, will be performed at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. Nominated for seven Fleur du Cap awards in six categories in 2006, this dynamic show scooped three awards for Best Costume and Prop Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Set Design. At the 2007 Naledi Awards in Johannesburg, GHOEMA received a further three awards, for Best Choreography, Best Musical Direction and Best Musical Production. It is the most recent and also the last creation by two icons in the South African music industry, David Kramer and Taliep Petersen whose work (District Six, Fairyland, Crooners, Poison, Klop Klop and Kat And The Kings) has been performed to audiences locally and abroad, since the late 1980's. Taliep, who was in the audience nightly during GHOEMA'S very brief run in Johannesburg last year, was murdered in December 2006 and this return season will be performed in his memory.

Delving deep into early South African history at the Cape, GHOEMA explores the roots of slave music as far back as the heyday of the mighty Dutch East Indian Company, which had an enormous influence on the lives of all people under its rule. The slaves that the Company brought to the Cape from countries as far away as Indonesia, India, Madagascar, East Africa and Java had an enormous impact on the settlement at the Cape. They influenced a cross-pollination of lifestyles, music, language and culture between themselves, the indigenous people, the Dutch and other European settlers.

[1] Welcome

Greetings for the Holidays and a warm welcome to this special two-month issue of the Learning Community Newsletter. It is time for those New Year’s resolutions regarding your professional involvement in the Learning Community, particularly in making the most of the newsletter. As you know it can become a viable vehicle or instrument for dialogue as well as information dissemination among colleagues of diverse backgrounds in all corners of the globe. Indeed, it will be good for more than the mind as one enjoys the presence of colleagues—new and old—from around the world. We also continue to encourage your contributions to the monthly newsletter and welcome your suggestions on how to further improve it in any way. We continue to encourage your contributions to the monthly newsletter and, of course, your participation in events such as the December 3 to 5, 2006 E-Learning Symposium as well as the June 2007 International Conference on Learning. As always, your thoughts, writings and action on these and other stages will help us to develop healthy collaboration and cooperation. Your editor was hoping to receive some responses to the comments made in the October 2006 issue in the small piece on collaboration that was shared in the wake of former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger statements surrounding what he termed a “war of civilizations.” Perhaps you have given this theme or some other one that might be of interest to our readers some further thought and would like to share your thinking with our readers. We look forward to your thoughts and suggestions in the newsletters to come and any other contributions that may be of interest to our readers, conference participants and other members of the Common Ground Community.

Welcome to the October 2006 issue of the Learning Community Newsletter. We continue to encourage your contributions to the monthly newsletter and, of course, to the call for papers and presentations at the upcoming E-Learning Symposium as well as the June 2007 International Conference on Learning which will provide a golden opportunity for persons from a variety of fields and interests from across the globe to learn together in an array of media. These kinds of professional pursuits among the Learning Community will help us to more effectively address the issues we face in the education sector and the challenges in the wider world. Your thoughts, writings and action on these and other stages will help us to build a new world order of healthy collaboration and cooperation in a variety of arenas and, hence, avoid the possibility of what persons like former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger refer to as a “war of civilizations.” As he questions, should not the avoidance of a “potential global catastrophe” be sufficient enough “to regenerate a common purpose?” We look forward to your thoughts and suggestions in the newsletters to come and any other contributions that may be of interest to our readers, conference participants and other members of the Common Ground Community.

-------------------------

COMMUNITY NEWS

-------------------------

With few contributions to the newsletter of late, it is a privilege to share some of your editor’s thoughts on collaboration with the intent of heightening genuine collaboration at all levels and among all peoples of our Global Community. Perhaps these thoughts will be of value to some of our readers and, certainly, it is the editor’s hope that they might stimulate further exchange on the topic and improve collaboration in the real world.

Some Thoughts on Collaboration

I remember the first stance that I took on the topic of collaboration. I was a young assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin. There was much unrest between the university administration and faculty and among the faculty itself. I stuck my young, tender neck out and wrote an article for the university newspaper entitled “Collaboration In; Competition Out”. As I recall, it was a call to identify our commonalities and stamp out “unhealthy” competition, recognizing that competition has its place in any organization when it is in the proper light of professional development as well as individual and group growth. Where I’m going with this piece is to express that there is room in any human enterprise for collaboration, regardless of how well it is or appears to be functioning. At the core of collaboration is, in my view, some commonality of purpose or cause. Usually there are also elements of diversity: diversity in strengths and resources brought to the scene; diversity in perhaps individual backgrounds; diversity in the main focus or the purpose of the partnering parties and the like. I also recall the paper that I wrote about collaboration when I was the head of the education division at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin following decades of segregation in the schools and adversity between the university and the local school district. I think that the title was something like: “University Education Departments and School Boards: The Tie That Binds”. The theme for this, too, was collaboration. In these and any genuinely productive collaborative arrangement, the chemistry among the partners should never be a forced one. I have seen and questioned what I call “artificial collaboration” in some reputable institutions and, it appeared to me, that it was being done to a large extent simply because it was in fashion.

Where I have seen collaboration work most successfully has been where, among others, the following conditions are present:

1 All parties have a common goal or end

2 Partners work within the same institutions or within institutions with similar audiences

3 The partners complement one another in terms of experiences, strengths, aligned missions and the like

4 There is or there is created a dialogue among partners for addressing the common goal or related ends

5 Some body or structure is in place or emerges out of necessity for clear, purposeful communications

6 The partnering doesn’t interfere with the main activities of the partners, and, last but not least

7 No one partner or partner group dominates the agenda of the partnership

I guess that I would add that there must be some recognizable, positive results that all the partners realize are contributions to the whole and each of the members.

WELCOME

Welcome to the September 2006 issue of the Learning Community Newsletter and, for many of us, a new academic year. Many of us have completed our summer vacations with family and friends and are gearing up for the year ahead. Perhaps this is an especially good time to make resolutions relative to our professional pursuits. May we suggest to you as a member of the Learning Community that you address one or more of the issues within the programs of the two conferences highlighted in this issue of the newsletter. The E-Learning Symposium, for example, provides a forum to bring together teachers, academics and experts in the area of e-learning ecosystems, planning and implementation of innovations and professional learning strategies. There is time to submit a proposal for this early-December 2006 symposium as well as the June 2007 International Conference on Learning which will provide a golden opportunity for persons from a variety of fields and interests from across the globe to learn together through an array of media. We encourage these kinds of professional pursuits among the Learning Community in order to more effectively address the issues we face in the education sector and the challenges in the wider world in this day and age. We look forward to your thoughts and suggestions on this and value any other contributions that may be of interest to our readers.

One of the group members who serves as an Education Officer in Jamaica expressed a core purpose behind our sessions on organizational change: “What are the common features we can use to eradicate poverty of mind and stomach?” We feel as a group that the response in concept and constructive implementations along this line could result in ‘’a far more perfect world’’ and that this, too, “’would lead, ultimately, to minimize human suffering and pledge the governments and peoples of the world to minimize, if not eliminate, conflicts among the diverse groups on Planet Earth.” What are your reactions to this thinking? Is it “pie in the sky”? Can we gather a following to make this a goal and eventual reality? Your newsletter editor is most willing to serve as a hub for receiving and sharing read reactions to this or other thoughts and questions resulting from the June conference or other community events. As a reminder, your editor is also interested in receiving the essential notes or similar quotes from the Talking Circle sessions conducted at the conference. Please send them directly to Phillip Kalantzis-Cope or the editor. The summary notes from the facilitators are to be based on the guidelines provided on pages 7 and 8 of the Learning Conference 2006 program.

On-line Masters Program in Global Studies in Education

The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign offers an on-line Masters program in Global Studies in Education. The program was developed in 2004 to support the efforts teachers and educational administrators are making to internationalize their programs, and to establish a framework for a dialogue among educators across national boundaries. It is based on the recognition that the world is now inextricably interconnected and interdependent, and that this requires educators to better understand with the changing economic, political and cultural context within which education takes place, and to engage with global issues that affect us all.

The program has both theoretical and practical components, and seeks to help educators explore and experiment with some of the ways in which global perspectives can be incorporated into existing curricula and pedagogies. The program is structured around six key themes: curriculum; educational policy; learning and classroom management; technology; identity and culture; and organizational change. There is also an opportunity to participate in a study tour abroad, and conduct a project in international education.

The program requires the completion of eight units, taken part-time over two years. Students work in a cohort of fellow teachers and administrators and receive all their instruction on-line. This flexibility is deigned to provide students access to the program from anywhere at anytime. Also attached to the program is an open access website that provides hyperlinks to research and teaching resources pertaining to globalization and education.

Further information about the program can be found on its website: http://gse.ed.uiuc.edu/ or by contacting the program director, Dr Fazal Rizvi by e-mail on gse@ed.uiuc.edu

WELCOME

------------------------

- Message from Anne Hudson, Plenary Speaker

We are getting close to the date of the 13th International Learning Conference. I'd like to suggest participants take a trip to Kingston. You can't get a full picture of Jamaica's intellectual and artistic life without visiting the capital.

In Kingston, there are many important sites of historic, educational and artistic interest that should not be missed. Chief among these is the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). UWI has a Visitors' Lodge and you could write to its manager, Mrs Pauline Millwood (pauline.milwood@uwimona.edu.jm) to enquire about accommodation.

Other possibilities include visits to schools, colleges, and the University of Technology, Jamaica, which is near to Mona. The National Gallery of Jamaica houses the best collection of art in the Caribbean, and there are several art galleries selling serious art. There will probably be plays and musical events that can be attended.

1.WELCOME

-----------------

Welcome to the May 2006 issue of the Learning Community Newsletter. With the month of June right around the corner, it is hoped that many of our readers have geared up for the Thirteenth International Conference on Learning that is to take place in Montego Bay, Jamaica from June 22 - 25, 2006. In preparation for the event, it is suggested that some time be spent in advance of your trip to update yourself on the rich history of Jamaica. It would also be advisable to search the Internet for the vast amount of information available through the websites of the Jamaican Government and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture on recent reform efforts in the area of education and related fields. Among some of the successes in education in recent years are those associated with the efforts of the New Horizons Project, the All Age School Project and the Primary Education Support Program. The Learning Community should be encouraged by the accomplishments of the Jamaican education sector which has worked in partnership with diverse stakeholders in concert with the broader community. There are certainly lessons to be learned in advance of your travels and, if at all possible, through visits, observations and dialogue with school children, teachers and others across the island after your arrival. Having had the opportunity to work closely with the Jamaican Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture for ten years since 1992, permit me to assure you that there is much to be gained at the Montego Bay conference and at sites of learning across the beautiful "land of wood and water" as the name of the island signifies.

We trust that you will enjoy this issue of the Learning Community Newsletter and we look forward to hearing from you about the content or any other relevant topic.

COMMUNITY NEWS

--------------------------------------

The latest news received before going to press on the May issues is the item below related to The Fourteenth International Conference on Learning. It is announced that it is to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is quite a jump from Jamaica. Indeed, the sites have moved across the globe since the first conference was held now over a dozen years ago. As a relatively recent beneficiary of the Learning Community through the annual conferences, the newsletter and other contacts, I want to encourage those of you who have hesitated for any reason whatsoever to attend the conferences in the past to do so out of the great opportunity they can afford you to live a more productive life through global sharing and resultant learning. My first conference was in Cuba in June 2004 and it is difficult to measure the immense benefits gained from the conference itself and the interaction with new friends and colleagues worldwide. This interaction and collegial exchange continues to this day and provides a unique kind of opportunity for professional development, especially for those of us who are not currently associated with institutions of learning such as colleges, schools and universities. Hence, I encourage your participation in the upcoming conferences in Jamaica and South Africa as well as through sharing of news briefs in the newsletter on topics of interest to our learning community readers. All of us could utilize the next June issue, for example, as a bridge to the 2006 Learning Conference, addressing the main theme of "Living Issues in Education". Let us hear from you before the end of May so as to feature any item of interest to the readers and conference participants. Perhaps it might be an effective way to highlight a special session or other conference-related area of interest. For your convenience and that of interested colleagues and others, journal, conference and newsletter links are provided throughout this issue. Please send your Learning Community news items to the Newsletter Editor at ernieoneil@gmail.com or eoneil@aed.org Since the newsletter is scheduled to be completed by the final week of each month, early entries each month are suggested. However, every effort will be made to include those timely news items that arrive anytime before the final week of the month. We look forward to hearing from you.

We have received a number of completed reports. Thank you to referees who have submitted their reports by the date requested. These reports are being verified and prepared for return to authors.
