Award Winner Announcement
Congratulations to Helen Lewis and Andrea Williams, the winners of the International Award for Excellence in the Area of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations.
Helen and Andrea's paper, 'Sharing the Story: Canadian First Nations' and 'Traveller Community Development', can be accessed in the online bookstore:
http://ijd.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.29/prod.556
Abstract: At the 6th International Conference on Diversity in 2006, participants from Northern Ireland and Canada had the opportunity to meet and discuss parallels between Irish Travellers in Northern Ireland and First Nations People in Canada. First Nations community development workers from Canada subsequently travelled to Northern Ireland to facilitate a series of workshops with a range of Irish Traveller organisations and Irish Travellers themselves. This paper discusses the impact and potential of this exchange between indigenous marginalised groups. It begins with an overview of the Irish Traveller and First Nations populations in Northern Ireland and Canada, as well as various policy responses to them. The paper then highlights some of the discussions that have taken place during Sharing The Story project activities - many of which have centred on improving community development practices and influencing effective public policy in relation to Irish Travellers. The interaction between First Nations people and Travellers has also opened up valuable space to explore new approaches to achieving positive change for Irish Travellers. This paper argues that this type of dialogue presents a useful alternative to the highly polarised debate that often takes place about the assimilation or integration of Travellers.

Review of Articles
Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful. This is why Common Ground provides all readers with the opportunity to comment on any paper that they've read via the 'Write a Review' feature. All you need to do is to go to the page for that particular article, go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'Write a Review' link and let your voice be heard. Give your review a title, add your review content and click on the star rating. All reviews are moderated by Common Ground's publishing team (to prevent irrelevant or slanderous submissions). Please note that the 'Write a Review' feature is not the place to inform us of typos in the catalogue. If you notice such mistakes and would like to report them, please contact us at journals@commongroundpublishing.com noting the product link and the specific error.
Contributing Editors Needed
The Diversity Community Newsletter is intended to serve as a forum through which its recipients can communicate items of relevance to their colleagues and, in doing so, assist in the building of community around a shared interest in diversity issues. Contributing Editors play a key role in the Newsletter by providing essential content, including information on conferences and symposia, fellowships, books by Diversity Community members, opportunities to publish, and additional items of interest. The Contributing Editors are particularly well suited to this role because their disciplinary affiliation, professional networks and geographical location, among other things, often provide them with access to information that might be otherwise overlooked or inaccessible.
We are currently looking for additional Contributing Editors for Diversity Community Newsletter. We greatly appreciate the continued participation of Contributing of Gregory P. Meyjes, PhD. visiting Professor at Middle Tennessee State University and CEO of Solidaris Intercultural Services L.L.Cs. However, we recognize that, given the size of the task, additional Editors are needed to significantly increase Newsletter content. We are looking for people who are professionally engaged and interested in the mission of the Newsletter, as well as able to commit to submitting at least one contribution per month.
In addition to assisting with the Newsletter, Contributing Editors serve on the International Advisory Board of the International Conference on the Diversity in Organisations (www.Diversity-Conference.com) and its corresponding journal The International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations (www.Diversity-Journal.com). Advisory Board members provide suggestions on the themes of each year's Conference and Journal, as well as the overall intellectual direction. In return, Contributing Editors receive a complimentary registration to the Conference and subscription to the Journal.
Applicants should send a letter of interest and CV to Helen Agans at helen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com. Please note that because we are interested in the serving the diverse, and truly international, interests of the Diversity Community, we hope to have a correspondingly diverse applicant pool. Once we have received and reviewed all applications, e-mail notifications will be sent to all applicants notifying them of the final decision.

O'Leary's academic career has always been combined with political advisory work. O'Leary subsequently played a significant role in public debate over the implementation of the report Link.
O'Leary has also worked as a constitutional advisor for the European Union and the United Nations in promoting confederal and federal resolutions in Somalia, and for the United Kingdom's Department of International Development in constitutional consultancies on power-sharing in coalition governments in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, and in Nepal. He contributed to the United Nations Human Development Report on Culture and Liberty (2004). Since 2003 he has been an international constitutional advisor to the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq, assisting in preparation for: the negotiation of the Transitional Administrative Law (2004); electoral systems design (2004-5); the Constitution of Iraq (2005); and the Constitution of the Kurdistan Region (2005- ongoing). Review of Articles
Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback
Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful.

----------------------------------------------------------* THE 7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DIVERSITY IN ORGANISATIONS, COMMUNITIES, AND NATIONS (http://www.Diversity-Conference.com)
We have just ended our biggest Diversity Conference ever, and some would say our best. Over six hundred people attended the conference, held at the Free University of Amsterdam and at InHolland School of Health. It was also our most diverse group of delegates ever - a remarkable range of people from about thirty different countries. One of the highlights of the conference was the opening by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen. We want to thank the City Government of Amsterdam for supporting the conference in such a wholehearted way, and for the insights of city administrators into their challenges and triumphs as they work in such a diverse social context. Another highlight was the spirited contribution of the Young Diversity group who had been involved in a parallel conference as part of Diversity Week. Still another was the vibrant performance of Musicians Without Frontiers in the closing session of the conference.
We particularly wish to thank Grethe van Geffen and Fiza Ahmed for putting so much work into making this conference a huge success. We also want to thank Greg Meyjes for doing a masterful job in co-ordinating the Talking Circles.
We hope you’ll be able to join us next year for the Eighth International Conference on Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations, to be held at HEC Montréal, Canada, 17-20 June 2008.

- New Book Release
Title: Fenced Out, Fenced In: Border Protection, Asylum and Detention in Australia
Editors: Natalie Bolzan, Michael Darcy and Jan Mason
Publisher: Common Ground Publishing
Website:TheHumanities.CGPublisher.com/
Description: This book is an important addition to the growing literature which addresses the issue of Australia’s policies towards people seeking asylum. In the early stages of the Tampa crisis, the government dominated the discussions around Australian refugee policy. Australians would decide who would live amongst us. Such decisions were easy when asylum seekers were depicted as non-law abiding, unruly and inhumane "others" who were very different from us. Slowly other voices have been added to this discussion and in different forums we have begun to hear from some of those people who sought asylum and who describe horrors, fears and terrors which made remaining where they were, unthinkable. These stories began to challenge the idea that these refugees were different from us. Still, the Australian hardline policies have continued. This volume broadens the debate by adding to the voices of some of those seeking asylum, the voices of people who have been working directly with refugees, as well as those of experts able to comment on the impact of the laws created around the refugees. Interesting questions emerge from the addition of these voices. If the people seeking asylum are doing so to escape tyranny, abuse, persecution and possible death, how does this make them different from us? If we Australians are flaunting international treaties to which we are signatories, incarcerating children and spending millions of dollars to detain and deter people seeking asylum amongst us, what does this say about what kind of people we are? Here, the voices of our own young Australians offer an answer when they hold up a mirror to us of hatred, fear and mean-spiritedness and ask, "is this what it means to be Australian?”

- Ninth National Metropolis Conference (Canada)
Exploring Canada's Diversity, Today and Tomorrow, 1 - 4, March, 2007, The Fairmont Royal York Hotel Toronto, Canada, www.metropolis2007.net
In a world characterized by globalization and transnationalism, Canada faces many opportunities and challenges in the successful integration of newcomers. The experience of the past 10 years notwithstanding, many old questions require new responses: What is the nature of citizenship in contemporary Canada? What does it mean to be Canadian? What are the factors influencing 'attachment' and 'belonging'? What access to resources for social, economic, cultural and political integration do newcomers have? What do newcomers need to do to facilitate their integration? How do we promote a just society? What is expected of newcomers? What might be done differently tomorrow?
Call for Proposals for Conference workshops
Three types of workshop will be offered in the afternoons:
a) "Issue-Related" Workshop - workshops which address specific topics related to immigration and settlement utilizing the regular or standard formal presentations and question-and-answer format;
b) Training Workshop - workshops that introduce specific programs, datasets or educational tools to those who work in the immigration and settlement fields; and
c) Roundtable Discussion - informal workshops organized to discuss or debate major controversies without presentations.
Organizers are invited to propose 90 or 180-minute workshops (two consecutive sessions). Given the limited total number of workshops, organizers are asked to justify 180-minute proposals. Submissions are accepted online at www.metropolis2007.net. The deadline is November 1, 2006. It is strongly recommend that the number of presenters be limited to a maximum of four per 90-minute session leaving at least 15 minutes for discussion.
All proposals are to include:
- Name and contact information of the workshop organizer(s)
- Title of the workshop (limited to 20 words)
- Abstract of the workshop (limited to 100 words)
- Format and detailed description of the workshop (limited to 250 words)
- List of presenters, confirmed and proposed (including representatives from the academic, government and community/NGO sectors)
- Justification for a 180-minute workshop
