** 2008 Humanities Conference **
We recently concluded the Sixth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities, held at Fatih University, Istanbul, Turkey, 15-18 July 2008. Tony Stavely of Common Ground provides personal reflections on the Conference:
Istanbul is a huge, gritty, fast-growing and lively place covering many square kilometers of former farmland east and west of the historic meeting place of waters and peoples on the Bosphorus. The developing Buyukcukmece district to the west is the home of Fatih University, site of the Sixth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. Approximately 350 in-person delegates presented papers or led workshops at the conference.
An excellent host organizing committee of Fatih faculty led by Vassil Hristov Anastassov and his colleagues Ali caksu, Ebubekir Ceylan, and Idil Isik made extensive arrangements and looked after the conference staff and delegates throughout the event. Beginning with a welcome by Prof. Dr. Oguz Borat, Rector of Fatih University, and Ibrahim Ozdemir, Director General for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of National Education, plenary sessions heard from Patrick Baert, Reader in Social Theory at the University of Cambridge, Alice Craven, Professor of Comparative Literature and FirstBridge Coordinator at the American University of Paris, Souad Halila, Professor of Anglo-American History at the University of Tunis, Selcuk Esenbel, Professor of History at Bogazici University and Vassil Anastassov reading the paper by Alpaslan Ac?kgenc, Professor of Philosophy at Fatih University, who was unable to attend the Conference.
In addition to many parallel sessions and lunchtime conversations, conference delegates were treated to a twilight boat trip on the Bosphorus as guests of Fatih University. Because the trip was postponed one day due to torrential rains, participants saw not only mosques, palaces and a glimpse of the Black Sea as they navigated the famous waterway but also the full moon rising over the Asian shore.

Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback
Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article, often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful. This is why Common Ground provides all readers with the opportunity to comment on any paper that they've read via the 'Write a Review' feature. All you need to do is to go to the page for that particular article, go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'Write a Review' link and let your voice be heard. Give your review a title, add your review content and click on the star rating. All reviews are moderated by Common Ground's publishing team (to prevent irrelevant or slanderous submissions).
Please note that the 'Write a Review' feature is not the place to inform us of typo's in the catalogue. If you note typo's that you'd like to let us know about please contact us at journals@commongroundpublishing.com noting the product link and the specific error.

- New Book Release
Title: Fenced Out, Fenced In: Border Protection, Asylum and Detention in Australia
Author: Stella Coram
Publisher: Common Ground Publishing
Website:http://TheHumanities.CGPublisher.com/
Description: Race is said to be irrelevant conceptually. Drawing on the notion of race formations (evolutionary hegemony) this study engages with the changing significance of race, through an examination of contemporary narratives depicting indigenous efficacy for sport in popular print content. The centrality of the black athletic body to narratives of indigenous dominance in Australian football signals the need to re-examine the social construct of race in the context of sport. Stella Coram argues that hyper celebrations of indigenous athletic performance, as markers of cultural difference and transformation, conform to colonial race discourse of civilisation and control because the physical, the body, becomes the basis for rationalising admittance into the dominant culture. In light of this, she claims that narratives gloss over the realities of competition and inclusion thereby reaffirming liberal assumptions of opportunity in sport. This study, written in a passionate yet reasoned style is suitable for undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as academics.

- New Book Release
Title: Fenced Out, Fenced In: Border Protection, Asylum and Detention in Australia
Editors: Natalie Bolzan, Michael Darcy and Jan Mason
Publisher: Common Ground Publishing
Website:http://TheHumanities.CGPublisher.com/
Description: This book is an important addition to the growing literature which addresses the issue of Australia’s policies towards people seeking asylum. In the early stages of the Tampa crisis, the government dominated the discussions around Australian refugee policy. Australians would decide who would live amongst us. Such decisions were easy when asylum seekers were depicted as non-law abiding, unruly and inhumane “others” who were very different from us. Slowly other voices have been added to this discussion and in different forums we have begun to hear from some of those people who sought asylum and who describe horrors, fears and terrors which made remaining where they were, unthinkable. These stories began to challenge the idea that these refugees were different from us. Still, the Australian hardline policies have continued. This volume broadens the debate by adding to the voices of some of those seeking asylum, the voices of people who have been working directly with refugees, as well as those of experts able to comment on the impact of the laws created around the refugees. Interesting questions emerge from the addition of these voices. If the people seeking asylum are doing so to escape tyranny, abuse, persecution and possible death, how does this make them different from us? If we Australians are flaunting international treaties to which we are signatories, incarcerating children and spending millions of dollars to detain and deter people seeking asylum amongst us, what does this say about what kind of people we are? Here, the voices of our own young Australians offer an answer when they hold up a mirror to us of hatred, fear and mean-spiritedness and ask, “is this what it means to be Australian?”

Perhaps an interesting topic may spring up around the theme of the next Humanities Community symposium (details below): is there a crisis in the humanities? There may be room in the community to discuss the relevance of current discourse in the humanities in light of the recent bombings in Mumbai and the severe unrest in the Middle East. What role can the humanities play to once again make a contribution to peace in the world?

Free speech still seems to be the central concern of the online conversations with a rather interesting debate opening up about cartoons, Islam and the Pope. Is free speech a justification or a smokescreen? Should the concept be treated as an absolute truth or as empty political rhetoric? Have your say: log on to the online conversations page and engage in the discussion.
