** International Award For Excellence In The Design Field - Winner Announced **

Congratulations to Magda Mostafa, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the design field.

Magda Mostafa's paper, Thinking Outside the Box: Addressing and Enhancing Visual/Spatial and Active Learning in Architectural Education, can be accessed in the online bookstore: http://ijg.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.154/prod.70.

Paper abstract: This paper proposes the use of a series of abstract, three-dimensional, geometric modeling exercises in the primary stage of the curriculum, before the student begins formal design studios. The skill sets and learning styles-particularly the visual/spatial and active- of a case study group of students will be assessed at the beginning and end of this 12 week period during which the students will progress through the series of exercises. The impact of this "learning through doing" process on the three dimensional thinking skills necessary for architectural design will be analyzed, with a hope to reinstate such manual modeling studios as a pre-requisite for, and integral part of, traditional architectural design education.

If you have purchased or read this paper, please add a review at

"No man was ever great by imitation." - Samuel Johnson Rasselas

Welcome to the March edition of the Design Community Newsletter. The aim of this newsletter is to inform readers of current information about the Design Conference and Journal hosted by Common Ground Publishing. In addition, the Design Newsletter is a democratic forum supporting researchers, professionals and practitioners interested in design-related news, events and information.

[2] Community News

-------------------------------

The 2008 IAP2 international conference: 'Public Participation and Corporate Social Responsibility: From Why to How' Running from August 27 - 29, the 2008 IAP2 international conference is based in Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde. It will be attractive to those in business, local authorities, the professions and third sectors, government, the armed forces, health and community sectors - in fact all those areas that would wish to perform public participation well, or perhaps better, than is happening at the moment. We are expecting first rate international speakers and rigorous debate. There will be a research strand running through the three days and a chance to hear what others have done and for you to experience immersion case studies where an effective partnership between public and business (however defined) has been established - to the benefit of all.

This will be a conference that is highly interactive: it will be both intellectually demanding and demonstrate good engagement processes. So, come and take part; come and present (should you wish) but most importantly, just come!

Please contact Diane Coyle on diane.coyle@strath.ac.uk for more information and a conference pack.

Participatory Design Conference

The 2008 Participatory Design Conference will be held September 30 to October 4 at Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Indiana, USA, hosted by the IU School of Informatics. It will be the 10th PDC and a golden opportunity to reassess the achievements of the PD movement and to consider its future. We hope to broaden further the focus of PD and to consider the relevance of its traditions and commitments to the new debates over design. As the home of the first US PhD in informatics, the School of Informatics is very pleased to be hosting PDC. The Bloomington campus of Indiana University provides an excellent occasion for the Participatory Design community to extend its dialogue with leading scholars in international and global education. The campus is the site of several of the leading Area Studies programs (e.g., African Studies, East Asian Studies) in the US, as well as the so-called 'i-school' movement in the US. The i- or "information" schools are higher education units, typically professional schools, which are developing program that goes beyond the traditional computer science curriculum, even beyond programs in Information Technology. Several of the more that 50 i-schools were previously Schools of Library Science that now call themselves Schools of Information, Information Studies, or Informatics.

Authors and Readers Want Your Feedback

Authors of papers, and people who are about to read an article often find post-publication reviews to be extremely helpful. This is why Common Ground provides all readers with the opportunity to comment on any paper that they've read via the 'Write a Review' feature. All you need to do is to go to the page for that particular article, go to the bottom of the page, click on the 'Write a Review' link and let your voice be heard. Give your review a title, add your review content and click on the star rating. All reviews are moderated by Common Ground's publishing team (to prevent irrelevant or slanderous submissions). Please note that the 'Write a Review' feature is not the place to inform us of typo's in the catalogue. [5] Contributing Editors Needed

------------------------------------------

The Design Community Newsletter is intended to serve as a forum through which its recipients can communicate items of relevance to their colleagues and, in doing so, assist in the building of community around a shared interest in Design. Contributing Editors play a key role in the Newsletter by providing essential content, including information on conferences and symposia, fellowships, books by the Design Community members, opportunities to publish, and additional items of interest. The Contributing Editors are particularly well suited to this role because their disciplinary affiliation, professional networks and geographical location, among other things, often provide them with access to information that might be otherwise overlooked or inaccessible.

We are currently looking for additional Contributing Editors for the Design Community Newsletter. We greatly appreciate the continued participation of Peter Burrows of RMIT in Australia. However we recognize that, given the size of the task, additional Editors are needed to significantly increase Newsletter content. We are looking for people who are professionally engaged and interested in the mission of the Newsletter, as well as able to commit to submitting at least one contribution per month.

In addition to assisting with the Newsletter, Contributing Editors serve on the International Advisory Board of the Conference on Design Principles and Practices (www.Design-Conference.com) and its corresponding Journal (www.Design-Journal.com). Advisory Board members provide suggestions on the themes of each year's Conference and Journal, as well as the overall intellectual direction. In return, Contributing Editors receive a complimentary registration to the Conference and subscription to the Journal.

Applicants should send a letter of interest and CV to Helen Agans at helen.agans@commongroundpublishing.com. Please note that because we are interested in the serving the diverse, and truly international, interests of the Technology Community, we hope to have a correspondingly diverse applicant pool. Once we have received and reviewed all applications, e-mail notifications will be sent to all applicants notifying them of the final decision.

Miami Design Conference

The Second International Conference on Design Principles and Practices was a terrific success and we want to thank all the participants for making it the most interesting Design Conference thus far. The Conference addressed a range of important themes and we're especially thankful to the main speakers who each contributed something unique: plenary speakers included Damian Barton and John Marquette, each of whom have a studio in Miami's Design District; Klaus Krippendorf, Norbert Wiener Medal winner and Past President of the International Communication Association; Mario Antonio Minichiello of the Birmingham City University in the UK; and Deana McDonagh of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

[3] Design Conference and Journal News

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Design Conference (Tony Stavely, Common Ground Publishing) Though January is cold month in much of the Northern Hemisphere, the Second International Conference on Design Principles and Practices in Miami, Florida, USA, gave a warm and lively time to about 100 in-person delegates on the 9th, 10th, and 11th. Besides the on-site participants, the meeting included 31 virtual presentations via the World Wide Web. Miami's significant design community was represented by plenary speakers Damian Barton and John Marquette, each of whom have a studio in the city's Design District. Norbert Wiener Medal winner and Past President of the International Communication Association Klaus Krippendorf, Mario Antonio Minichiello of the Birmingham City University in the UK, and Deana McDonagh of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign rounded out the list of plenary speakers. On-site presenters of papers and workshops came from ten different countries, though it must be said the great majority arrived from the host country. They represented a wide variety of academic disciplines and included a number of design practitioners. From the first Talking Circle sessions on to the closing session, people had a lot to say to each other. One theme emphasized in the general discussion at the close was the importance of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education for the rising generation of designers. To do much one must be in touch with much, must notice, investigate, and digest much.

Special thanks to Daniel Araya-Tessema of the University of Illinois and Heather Murray of the University of Toronto who were a big help in making things go in Miami. Scott Parker of the Hyatt Hotel and J.C. Gonzalez of the University of Miami Convention Center were great to work with and smoothly handled many technical details.

AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT

Congratulations to Wendy E. Keay-Bright, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the Design Field.

Paper abstract: This paper demonstrates the importance of participation with end-users and interdisciplinary collaboration with experts, to the design process. The context for this study is interaction between autistic children and computers in education. Whereas computers in education are conventionally associated with task-based learning, my research uses the computer as a tangible interface for embodied play activities. I make two claims with regard to the participatory design process. (1) There is, I argue, an important relationship between the participatory design process and the design of play for autistic children. End-user participation in this context allows the highly particular responses and reactions of autistic children to be recorded and included in the evolutionary design process. (2) The interdisciplinary approach to collaboration presents a challenging paradox for designers, as it requires both imaginative and empirical design methods. Whilst it is often critical to have statistic analysis to satisfy scientific approaches, it is of equal importance, within this area of research, to understand the idiosyncratic behavioural patterns of individuals on a spectrum of autistic difference. In this paper, I (a) set out my work on the computer as a tangible interface for embodied play, (b) demonstrate, through examples of the Reactive Colours research methods, how autistic children claim the embodied play environment as their own, and (c) describe how this appropriation by the children and interdisciplinary collaboration is incorporated into the design process. I also indicate the benefits which the tangible interface has for enhancing the learning capacities of autistic children.

Dr Keay-Bright's paper, The Reactive Colours Project: Demonstrating Participatory and Collaborative Design Methods for the Creation of Software for Autistic Children, can be accessed in the online bookstore: http://ijg.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.154/prod.17

CALL FOR PAPERS – SPECIAL EDITION - visual:design:scholarship
Research Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association

This Special Issue of visual:design:scholarship : Research Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association, invites your contribution to the exploration and evaluation of the potential relationships between graduate design education, design research and the design professions.

Themes
For this edition of visual:design:scholarship contributions are sought from design educators and practitioners who are engaged in this field knowledge creation in theory and practice. Although the focus of the journal is on Graphic Design, contributions from other fields of design practice will be accepted if they explore and/or contribute to broader understandings of design education and practice.

Themes to be explored may included:

Contributions in the form of case studies of the experiences of educators or students are also encouraged. In particular we invite practitioners who have completed graduate programs of study to reflect on and critique how this experience has informed their professional practice. Has your graduate education experience had an ongoing influence on professional practice? Equally, the perspective of industry on postgraduate education would add a rich dimension to the discussion. Such case study submissions must be more than historical narratives; they need to include reflections and critique of the challenges, successes, theoretical frameworks and/or influences that have informed the author's experiences.

The Guest Editor is particularly interested in contributions that explore this important and dynamic area of education and practice. As visual:design:scholarship Research Journal is a publication within the visual design domain, contributors are encouraged to consider the form of their submission and are encouraged to make use of visual communication tools and methods in their submission. All submissions will be peer reviewed. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that their submission meets the guidelines as listed below, and that submissions have author details removed from file names etc. The main discussion equivalent file must also be submitted as a single file that can be distributed electronically.

Procedure: The normal conditions and guidelines of the journal apply for this Special Issue. Full submissions should be sent directly to the Special Issue Guest Editor: Laurene Vaughan (laurene.vaughan@rmit.edu.au), to arrive no later than midnight, Friday, 21st of September 2007. As the journal is electronic, all articles accepted on recommendation of the peer reviewers will be published.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DESIGN

The editor of the inaugural issue of the International Journal of Design Lin-Lin Chen invites members of the design community to check out this open-access journal devoted to publishing research papers in all fields of design. According to Lin-Lin this new journal aims to provide an international forum for exchange of ideas and findings from researchers across different cultures, by encouraging research on the impacts of cultural factors on design theory and practice. It also seeks to promote transfer of knowledge between professionals in academia and industry, by emphasizing research where results are of interest or applicable to design practices. Congratulations Lin-Lin and to all the contributors – it is great to have another outlet for design research.

[1] Welcome

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Design Community Newsletter, a forum for design-related news, thoughts, & information. The newsletter will, with your help and thoughtful contributions, contain announcements, profiles, and information pertinent to anyone with an interest in design. The aim of the newsletter, as with the inaugural International Conference on Design Principles and Practices held in London in January this year, is to foster engagement with and between people from different disciplines related to design.

The newsletter will contain updates on the International Journal of Design Principles and Practices and on the associated annual International Conference on Design Principles and Practices – we hope to announce details of the 08 conference in the next issue.

The Newsletter is edited by Dr. Peter Burrows from the Globalism Institute at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia. Please email your contributions to him at: peter.burrows@rmit.edu.au

[2] Community News

-------------------------------

In this section of the newsletter we aim to offer readers a broad range of community news but in keeping with our participatory ideals the success of this newsletter will depend on your contributions. These contributions can include:information relevant to the community e.g. government policies and initiatives, recent debates where you are that you believe might be relevant to the broader community, awards or scholarships that you would like to share with others, new degree courses offered by your institution; information – including conferences, ‘Calls for Papers’ in relation to relevant publications, such as books, monographs, journal articles, special editions and web-based articles that you believe would be of interest to the community; and last but perhaps most importantly profiles of community members and their activities. This probably means someone writing a profile about someone else and submitting that profile to the newsletter… (please)

However, in the interest of providing a ‘democratic space’ in which as many people as possible are heard, we ask you to use short summary paragraphs with links and contact details for further information. The following are examples of what we have in mind…

AIGA DESIGN CONFERENCE 07: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

It seems that everyone is wondering about the future of design. The committee organizing this years AIGA Design conference are asking prospective participants ‘Where do we go from here?’ They declare on their website that participants at this year’s conference will ‘experience new directions in design, hear from considered voices on the evolution of designing, and learn what steps you'll need to pursue for your work to be relevant well into the 21st century’. With more than 2500 delegates expected don’t forget to pack your illuminated name-tag… Details follow:

SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION 07

This is the 12th annual conference in the ‘Towards Sustainable Product Design' series of conferences and perhaps deserves to attract the brightest minds in design. After all, is there any other topic at the moment that is hotter in our community than sustainable design? (Editorial bias…) The conference organizers say on their website: ‘Sustainable Innovation 07 will provide a platform to discuss 'state of the art thinking' in sustainable innovation, technology, product and service design and development. It will highlight best practice and provide a range of case studies and examples.’

BETTER BY DESIGN: BATTLING THE THROWAWAY CULTURE

Staying with the theme of sustainable design those of you who may be teaching design this year could be interested in an article with the above title from the January 04 2007 issue (2585) of New Scientist magazine. The article, by Ed Douglas, is written in an easily accessible manner and outlines the case for sustainable design practices and designing things that last. He references Paul Hawken and Amory Lovins’ book Natural Capitalism and talks with Ezio Manzini as well as other famous design figures. An excellent article suitable for undergrads and as a conversation starter for postgrads.

NOT JUST FOR ACADEMICS: INTEL TECHNOLOGY JOURNAL

The academy is not the only place where interesting research is taking place. Many companies large and small are involved in fascinating research projects and in some cases making at least some of that research public. The folk at Intel are a case in point – we don’t always have to love the big guys but at least we should hear what they are up to… Many of the brightest and most creative people in the design community work inside organizations – their contributions are actively encouraged in this newsletter.

Design Principles and Practices: An International Journal (http://www.Design-Journal.com)

It is very exciting to be working on the first volume of this new Journal. The DPP journal is a site of discussion exploring the meaning and purpose of 'design', as well as speaking in grounded ways about the task of design and the use of designed artefacts and processes. The resulting conversations weave between the theoretical and the empirical, research and application, market pragmatics and social idealism.

In professional and disciplinary terms, the journal traverses a broad sweep to construct a transdisciplinary dialogue which encompasses the perspectives and practices of: anthropology, architecture, art, artificial intelligence, business, cognitive science, communication studies, computer science, cultural studies, design studies, education, e-learning, engineering, ergonomics, fashion, graphic design, history, information systems, industrial design, industrial engineering, instructional design, interior design, interaction design, interface design, journalism, landscape architecture, law, linguistics and semiotics, management, media and entertainment, psychology, sociology, software engineering, technical communication, telecommunications, urban planning and visual design.

The journal is relevant for academics in the design and applied sciences, professions, social sciences and humanities, research students, design practitioners, industry-based designers, professionals and managers, public administrators and trainers and industry consultants.

The DPP journal is fully peer-reviewed with a rigorous refereeing process to ensure a high standard of quality. The editors and advisory board comprise leading scholars in the education field.
