There are a number of different databases being used in development of open source software and each one can have one or more methods of indexing text fields. How a text search is implemented can dramatically affect the performance of the application. Each indexing method has its own pros and cons and this presentation will look at the different indexing methods used such as internals types like full text indexes, regular expressions and PostgreSQL's TSearch2 index. Other external methods such as the Sphinx and Apache Lucene projects are also examined.
